The University of California invites nominations and applications for the position of Chancellor of the University of California, Irvine campus.
The University of California, Irvine combines the strengths of a major research university with the bounty of an incomparable Southern California location. Since its opening in fall 1965, UCI has become internationally recognized for efforts that are improving lives through research and discovery, fostering excellence in scholarship and teaching, and engaging and enriching the community.
With more than 24,000 students, 1,400 faculty members and 8,100 staff, UCI is among the fastest-growing campuses in the University of California system. Increasingly a first-choice campus for students, UCI ranks among the top U.S. universities in the number of undergraduate applications and, for fall 2004, the campus admitted the most academically competitive freshman class in its history. Orange County's second-largest employer, UCI generates an annual economic impact on the county of $3 billion.
A member of the American Association of Universities, UCI is a center for quality education that honors classic instruction while incorporating the best new scholarship. U.S. News & World Report consistently ranks UCI among the nation's best public universities. Achievements in the sciences, arts, humanities, medicine and management also have garnered numerous national rankings for UCI's schools, departments and programs. Three UCI researchers have won Nobel Prizes in the last ten years.
Interdisciplinary research, a UCI hallmark, is evident in the California Institute for Telecommunications and Information Technology, or Calit2, Newkirk Center for Science and Society, Center for Unconventional Security Affairs and innovative instructional programs in biomedical engineering, global cultures and other collaborations.
UCI reaches beyond the classroom and laboratory to solve societal issues and support human development. In the health sciences, UCI is noted for its research into cancer, neurosciences and the genetic underpinnings of disease. UCI Medical Center, Orange County's only university hospital, is building a new hospital facility that will transform health care for the region's citizens. Upon completion in 2009, this new academic medical center will house the latest medical technologies and strengthen UCI's ability to provide specialized medical and surgical treatments.
The Chancellor is the chief executive officer of the campus and is responsible to the President. Within the scope of University policy the chancellor exercises very broad delegated authority and is responsible for all aspects of campus administration. Candidates should have demonstrated leadership skills in an academic environment; senior experience in the administration of diverse and complex organizations, preferably research universities; and a strong record of teaching, research, and scholarship.
