Celebrating the Year of the Rat

UC Irvine Medical Center’s Diversity Committee hosted an Asian Lunar New Year Celebration for staff, faculty, patients and the public Feb. 21 at the medical center’s Café Patio. Vietnamese team members, including Tiffany Dang, Cathy Ta and Chi Nguyen, served traditional New Year’s sweets and candied fruits, while the Chinese team (Cynthia Chan, Jane Fu, Jade Yang and Lili Chen) tested guests’ skills with chopsticks.

The Diversity Committee and Diversity Teams represent 15 cultures, and offer seminars as well as fun “patio events” featuring live entertainment, educational booths, food and traditional garments. The committee will stage its annual multicultural Diversity Fair 11 a.m.-2 p.m. Thursday, May 15, on the lawn of Bldg. 55. Other lunchtime celebrations planned this year include St. Patrick’s Day in March, Cinco de Mayo in May, Juneteenth in June, USA country picnic in July, Hawaiian-Polynesian luau in August, and a Spiritual diversity event in the fall.

About the UC Irvine Medical Center Diversity Committee: Since an important aspect of patient care is respect for and knowledge of various beliefs, customs and practices related to the healthcare of Orange County’s diverse patient population, the Diversity Committee strives to infuse cultural and spiritual awareness and sensitivity among medical center staff and faculty. Committee goals are to promote healthcare and cultural awareness and understanding among staff, faculty, students, patients and visitors; while educating each other about different healthcare and cultural beliefs, values and practices.
