Dynes' Welcome

Dear Colleagues:

I am very pleased to announce that Michael Drake, M.D., a longtime UC faculty member and administrator and current UC vice president for health affairs, has been named UC Irvine's fifth chancellor, effective July 1, 2005.

I am enthusiastic about his appointment. He is an accomplished academic and physician; an administrator who has devoted a major portion of his career to students and student affairs; and a leader in conducting public service activities and expanding opportunity for others.

He is a warm, thoughtful, articulate and energetic individual - all the things that will be integral to forging a strong bond with the UCI community - and I think he is the right person to build upon the campus's many achievements under Chancellor Cicerone.

UCI faculty, staff and students are invited to meet the new chancellor at 10 a.m. Friday, May 27 in Aldrich Park, near the rock garden just below the Library Plaza. Chancellor Cicerone is authorizing administrative leave for staff members wishing to attend. The event also will be broadcast live on KUCI 88.9 FM and online at http://kuci.org/mp3stream.m3u for those unable to attend.

I hope you can be there to join me in welcoming Chancellor-designate Drake to UCI.
