Partners in P-20 Education

UCI academic preparation programs touch the lives of tens of thousands of pre-kindergarten, K-12 and community college students annually. UCI is developing better K-12 teachers through innovative programs in physics, chemistry, engineering, social sciences, social ecology, arts and humanities, to name a few.

| 75,000: Community service hours contributed annually by UCI students in the Social Ecology Field Study Program in areas ranging from corrections and law enforcement to teaching and mentoring.

Vibrant Cultural Offerings

Entertaining dance, drama and music performances, as well as engaging gallery exhibitions and film festivals, highlight the array of public lectures, workshops and other programs held at UCI each year.

Winning Anteater Athletics

Strong finishes in numerous sports have propelled UCI into the nation’s top five non-football athletics programs in each of the last six years, including runner-up showings the past two years and first place in 2007. Six Anteater teams were in the top-20 national rankings during 2011-12.

| 54: U.S. Olympians – players and coaches – claimed by UCI. At least four UCI athletes have competed in each of the last 10 Summer Olympic Games. In 2012, Ryan Bailey ’06 made his fourth Olympic appearance, tying for most appearances by a men’s water polo player in Olympic history.

Leaders in Medical Research and Patient Care

| $5.6 MILLION: UCI’s last 2012 stem cell research award – for work on Alzheimer’s disease and retinitis pigmentosa – from the California Institute for Regenerative Medicine. In total, UCI has garnered nearly $100 million in CIRM funding.

| 1st: UC Irvine Medical Center’s Dr. Nitin Bhatia and Dr. Samuel Bederman conducted the initial robot-assisted spinal surgery on the West Coast.

A 3-0 sweep over USC clinched the NCAA Men's Volleyball Championship in May 2012.

Medical Research

Anderson & Cummings

UCI researchers Aileen Anderson and Brian Cummings, in collaboration with StemCells Inc., received a $20 million award to develop the first human clinical trials in the U.S. of stem cell-based therapies.
