UCI Health Leadership Update
July 1, 2020
I want to start today’s update by thanking our dedicated and talented team of experts leading our surge preparedness and response efforts. As mentioned last week, we have several workgroups working day and night to ensure we are well prepared for challenges ahead.
June has truly been our busiest month since the start of the pandemic. Last month, UCI Health admitted more than 180 COVID-positive patients. In addition, we have tested more than 4,470 patients via drive-up testing at three locations, and have cared for 38,694 ambulatory patients in-person and 12,310 via telehealth. We have also seen an increase in our call volume. Our patient access center received more than 79,280 calls, and received more than 2,220 of COVID-related calls. This volume may continue to increase over the next several weeks as a result of the holiday weekend.
In early April, two surge tents were installed outside of DH 12 and the DH west entrance to be readied for triage, ED overflow and additional patient care space, as needed. These tents will be re-deployed tomorrow as a contingency ahead of the long holiday weekend. The hospital incident command team for COVID planning will make recommendations for their use.
I want to reassure you that the safety of our health care team, patients and the community we serve remains the top priority. Stay tuned for more surge plan announcements in the coming weeks.
