NPR’s ‘UCI week’ concludes with how airplanes can achieve net-zero emissions
National Public Radio is featuring UCI scholars this week for its “Academic Minute” segment. In today’s episode, Candelaria Bergero, Ph.D. student in Earth system science, examines how to cut emissions from one form of transport.
Non-heterosexual cancer survivors endure more health problems
Public health researchers have determined that lesbian, gay and bisexual cancer survivors experience a lower quality of life than their heterosexual counterparts, specifically in the mental and social aspects of their overall health. “More research is needed to identify the unique needs and strengths of sexual minority patients, as well as the ways that cancer care may not be adequately meeting these healthcare needs,” says Michael Hoyt, associate professor of population health and disease prevention.
U.S. Department of Energy features UCI water reclamation project
UCI’s partnership with the Irvine Ranch Water District on water reclamation is a featured case study on the U.S. Department of Energy’s Better Buildings website. The partnership focused on converting the cooling water system at the campus’ central plant from potable water to recycled water. The project saved 61 million gallons of drinking water annually.

What are clinical trials and how do they work?
Clinical trials are research studies used to find new treatments. They help researchers answer important questions about each potential treatment. New treatments can only be made widely available after clinical trials show they are safe and effective. Each clinical trial has different rules about who can join, called eligibility criteria, to make sure they provide the specific answers researchers are looking for.
